Norway Family Tree

Norwegian genealogy is exceptionally well-documented. Digitalarkivet provides free access to church records, census data, and emigration lists dating back centuries.

Norway naming patterns

Like Sweden, Norway used a patronymic system until the early 1900s. Farm names (gårdsnavn) were also commonly used as surnames, meaning a person's surname could change when they moved to a different farm.

Migration history

Between 1825-1925, about 800,000 Norwegians emigrated to North America — roughly one-third of Norway's population. The upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota) has the strongest Norwegian-American heritage.
