How to Export a GEDCOM File from Ancestry
Your family tree data belongs to you. Here's how to download it from Ancestry.com as a GEDCOM file — and turn it into a beautiful, shareable website.
What is a GEDCOM file?
GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) is the universal file format for family tree data. It's supported by virtually every genealogy program and service, making it the standard way to move your family tree between platforms.
A GEDCOM file contains all the individuals in your tree, their relationships, birth/death dates, places, and other events — everything except photos and documents.
Step-by-step: Export from Ancestry.com
- Sign in to Ancestry.com and navigate to your family tree.
- Click the tree name in the upper left corner of the tree view.
- Select "Tree Settings" from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down to the "Manage Your Tree" section.
- Click "Export Tree". Ancestry will prepare your GEDCOM file.
- Once ready, click "Download your GEDCOM file". The file will be saved to your Downloads folder as a
.gedfile.
What's included in the export?
- All individuals and their relationships
- Birth, death, and marriage dates and places
- Source citations
- Notes you've added to individuals
Not included: Photos, documents, DNA matches, and hints are not part of the GEDCOM export. These are Ancestry-specific features tied to their platform.

If your subscription has expired, you can still access and export your tree data. Ancestry retains your tree even after cancellation.
How large will my GEDCOM file be?
Most GEDCOM files are surprisingly small — typically under 1 MB even for trees with hundreds of people. The file is plain text, so it compresses well.
Can I import my GEDCOM into other genealogy programs?
Yes! GEDCOM is the universal standard. You can import it into MyHeritage, FamilySearch, RootsMagic, Gramps, Family Tree Maker, and many other programs.
